It is observed on Sept. 17, the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the document in 1787. The law establishing Constitution Day as a holiday was created in 2004. Legislative Day provides future pharmacists the opportunity to bring any matters occurring in the world of pharmacy to the attention of the legislators from their district. All pharmacy schools in Pennsylvania are invited to attend and bring posters or other materials to help discuss any issue future pharmacists would hope to improve. The LECOM students presented a posted which addressed current issues and barriers regarding smoking cessation.

"Did you hear the heart beating?" said second-year LECOM Bradenton medical student Nicholas Kotch, who set up a heart and lung simulator at a mini medical school at Nolan Middle School in Bradenton. "Just by listening through this stethoscope, we can determine if there are any problems."

They heard 22 lectures presented by LECOM faculty and alumni.

This year's conference included a special presentation on organ and tissue transplant donations sponsored by the Colby Foundation. Starla Cassani and her husband John Cassani, DO, created the educational foundation in memory of their son Colby. After his death in 1993, the Cassani's arranged the donation of his tissue to save lives of people awaiting organ transplants.

Pirate-fest is an annual street fair held outside of McKechnie Field that gives local organizations the opportunity to disseminate information to the public.

Third-year osteopathic medical student Alicia Bamberg earned the top award – a $5,000 scholarship from the Osteopathic and Podiatric Foundation of East Orlando Hospital – presented at the conference luncheon at Hyatt Pier 66.

LECOM Bradenton Medical Students Teach Anti-Tobacco Message LECOM Bradenton osteopathic medical students helped Manatee County fifth- and sixth-graders “ATTAC” the problem of tobacco use.

The medical students gave a day of community service presenting the Area Health Education Center’s Tobacco Training And Cessation (ATTAC) program.

In 2007-08, the ATTAC program presented the dangers of smoking to more than 5,000 elementary and middle school students in Manatee and Sarasota counties, said Emily Hite, ATTAC training coordinator for Gulf Coast South AHEC.

Fifth and sixth-graders cringed while watching videos on the harmful effects of tobacco use. LECOM Bradenton second-year pharmacy student Sara Elmunaier had students crumple up a piece of paper several times to demonstrate how smoking impacts one’s appearance.

“The DiMarco family has roots in professions that nurture the community. Wellness Center continues to take shape LECOM’s Medical Fitness and Wellness Center continues to take shape as construction crews continue to work on the inside of the building throughout the summer and into the fall. Completion of the project is expected by the end of 2008.

Recently, LECOM hired Michael Hyek, PhD, as Director of the Medical Fitness and Wellness Center. An experienced medical wellness facility director, Dr. Hyek is uniquely qualified in program management and development, process improvement and operations as a result of experience obtained in medical fitness centers, academic institutions, privately owned business and cardiac rehabilitation programs.

LECOM expands class size to include courses at Seton Hill University LECOM has received preliminary approval to expand the Erie class size by 104 students in 2009 and the College has reached an additional site agreement with Seton Hill University to hold classes for those students in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. On May 8, two wrecked vehicles were hauled onto the football field at Braden River High School. LECOM ERC students played the role of motorists who had just been severely injured in an alcohol-related accident.

Staff members from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Braden River Fire Department, EMS and BayFlite’s helicopter team recreated the roles they would perform as if they were actually responding to an accident.

The event was coordinated with Manatee County’s emergency service agencies, Braden River High School and Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
