LECOM commemorates World AIDS Day

Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine students, faculty and staff joined together to commemorate World AIDS Day in the school’s atrium on Dec. 1 by participating in a human red ribbon to help raise awareness about AIDS and reflect their support in the effort to eradicate it. The event is organized by Richard Ortoski, DO, Chairman of the Department of Primary Care Education. Members of the LECOM community formed a human red ribbon in commemoration of World AIDS Day. The LECOM Chorus performed two songs while members of the LECOM community gathered to create the red ribbon. On the second floor of the LECOM building, several quilts were put on display. These AIDS Memorial quilts are made up of different symbols representing HIV, hope and the future.

LECOM's annual scholarship auction a success

The largest crowd in the 16-year history of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine’s Student Scholarship Auction participated in an evening of festivities on Friday, Nov. 13, at the Erie Bayfront Convention Center. Beginning with the silent auction and ending with the excitement of each bid in the live auction, over 800 guests took part in the College’s signature fundraising event to benefit deserving medical and pharmacy students.

Silvia Ferretti, DO, LECOM’s Provost, Senior Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs opens the 2009 Osteopathic Medical Conference and Exposition in New Orleans. LECOM’s Provost, Senior Vice President and Dean of Academic Affairs Silvia Ferretti, DO, served as the conference’s program chairperson. Dr. Ferretti officially opened the conference to nearly 5,000 medical professionals at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

The Erie community kicked off events for Breast Cancer Awareness Month on Oct. 1, and LECOM took time to help recognize those afflicted with the condition. They helped kick off the premiere of a new children's television program that begins airing this fall in Erie. LECOM hosted the Premiere Party for Wellsville USA, a 13-episode television program that encourages children and their parents to take a mind, body, and spirit approach to healthy living. LECOM underwrote production for the first season of Wellsville which begins airing October 3 and every Saturday morning at eight on WXF_TV, the Erie FOX affiliate.

LECOM & Mercyhurst College Form Health Care and Sports Medicine Partnership

Mercyhurst College and the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine (LECOM) today announced a partnership that will create new educational and health care opportunities for both institutions while fostering their collaboration on a variety of research projects. Ask your average first- or second-year medical student about Constitution Day and one is likely to be met with a reflective pause, followed by a simple question: “What is Constitution Day?” Constitution Day is an American federal holiday that recognizes the ratification of the U.S. Constitution. It is observed on Sept. 17, the day the U.S. Constitutional Convention signed the document in 1787. The law establishing Constitution Day as a holiday was created in 2004. In May 2005, the U.S. Department of Education announced the enactment of this law and that it would apply to any school receiving federal funds of any kind.

The largest class in LECOM School of Pharmacy Bradenton's history reported to campus to begin their four-year path through Pharmacy school. The Class of 2013 is represented by 115 students from 21 states. Students hailing from Florida make up 58 percent of the incoming class. During orientation, the first-year students participated in the annual team-building exercises at Summerfield Park in Lakewood Ranch. With the help of their peers, students tried to navigate through a course of mini mouse-traps blindfolded and worked together to find their way into a bungee cord tent.

LECOM brings fitness awareness to Erie

LECOM helped members of the regional community “Celebrate Erie” recently. LECOM medical students teamed up with representatives of Wellsville for healthy living presentations during the Celebrate Erie festival. During the city’s annual downtown Celebrate Erie festival, LECOM and Wellsville teamed up to discuss the importance of healthy living and proper nutrition. A group of medical students helped creative interactive demonstrations with visitors to the LECOM/Wellsville tent, while others discussed the importance of proper eating habits, exercise and hygiene.

A new class of students hoping to make its mark on the future of health care arrived at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine as the LECOM School of Pharmacy welcomed its Class of 2012. Hershey Bell, MD, MS (Med Ed), Vice President and Dean of the LECOM School of Pharmacy, welcomes the Class of 2012 during orientation. More than 120 students began their first steps toward a Doctor of Pharmacy degree with several presentations and lectures taking place through the first two days of orientation. Over the students' first weekend at the school, they had the opportunity to introduce their families to the school and to learn more about the pharmacy program from its faculty and administrators. Also, the students met with members of the Class of 2011 at a welcoming picnic at Waldameer Park in Erie.

Christopher Ganey of Bradenton and Summer Moon of St. Petersburg are among the students from the Class of 2013 who hail from Florida. More than half (51 percent) of the incoming students are from Florida. This is the first time in LECOM Bradenton's six-year history that the majority of the class consists of in-state residents.

High-schoolers participate in LECOM programs

As another summer continues in Erie, local high school students are taking full advantage of the opportunity to learn more about the intricate aspects of medicine, medical school and anatomy. LECOM hosted two weeklong Medical Applications of Science and Health, or M.A.S.H., programs for students from several area high schools. The program gives these students an opportunity to take a closer look at medical education and the practice of medicine.

Students in the LECOM School of Pharmacy have taken an active role in the community this summer with several events designed to help out those in need in the Erie community. Members of the LECOM School of Pharmacy Rho Chi Honor Society volunteered their time to participate in the East County Relay for Life at Harborcreek High School in suburban Erie. The students volunteered at the Fight Back mission integration tent as well as the Cancer Action Network tent. Members of the society distinguished themselves in special shirts that designated their affiliation with Rho Chi and LECOM.

U.S. News and World Report has released this year’s best medical school rankings, and the nation’s 25 colleges of osteopathic medicine are well-represented among the 146 schools responding to the magazine’s survey. Eight out of the top ten (including all of the top five) medical schools listed in answer to the question “Which schools turn out the most primary care residents?” are osteopathic medical schools.

The Erie BayHawks finished its first season with a win and a special ceremony thanking LECOM for helping the team get its start in the NBA Development League. BayHawks President Ron Sertz congratulated LECOM for signing on as the premier sponsor. Legislative Day provides future pharmacists the opportunity to bring any matters occurring in the world of pharmacy to the attention of the legislators from their district. All pharmacy schools in Pennsylvania are invited to attend and bring posters or other materials to help discuss any issue future pharmacists would hope to improve. The LECOM students presented a posted which addressed current issues and barriers regarding smoking cessation.

"Did you hear the heart beating?" said second-year LECOM Bradenton medical student Nicholas Kotch, who set up a heart and lung simulator at a mini medical school at Nolan Middle School in Bradenton. "Just by listening through this stethoscope, we can determine if there are any problems."

Primary Care 2009 Continuing Medical Education Conference Wraps Up

More than 160 physicians completed the three-day Primary Care 2009 CME Conference at Peek'n Peak Conference Center in Findley Lake, NY. They heard 22 lectures presented by LECOM faculty and alumni.

This year's conference included a special presentation on organ and tissue transplant donations sponsored by the Colby Foundation. Starla Cassani and her husband John Cassani, DO, created the educational foundation in memory of their son Colby. After his death in 1993, the Cassani's arranged the donation of his tissue to save lives of people awaiting organ transplants.

Under sun-drenched skies, LECOM Bradenton students and staff participated in Pirate-fest prior to the Pirates-Astros spring training game at McKechnie Field.

Pirate-fest is an annual street fair held outside of McKechnie Field that gives local organizations the opportunity to disseminate information to the public.

LECOM Bradenton students and faculty members were honored at the 106th annual Florida Osteopathic Medical Association (FOMA) conference in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

Third-year osteopathic medical student Alicia Bamberg earned the top award – a $5,000 scholarship from the Osteopathic and Podiatric Foundation of East Orlando Hospital – presented at the conference luncheon at Hyatt Pier 66.

LECOM Bradenton osteopathic medical students helped Manatee County fifth- and sixth-graders “ATTAC” the problem of tobacco use.

The medical students gave a day of community service presenting the Area Health Education Center’s Tobacco Training And Cessation (ATTAC) program.

In 2007-08, the ATTAC program presented the dangers of smoking to more than 5,000 elementary and middle school students in Manatee and Sarasota counties, said Emily Hite, ATTAC training coordinator for Gulf Coast South AHEC.

Forty-eight LECOM School of Pharmacy Bradenton students spread the anti-tobacco message to elementary and middle school students in Sarasota and Manatee counties on Nov. 17.

Fifth and sixth-graders cringed while watching videos on the harmful effects of tobacco use. LECOM Bradenton second-year pharmacy student Sara Elmunaier had students crumple up a piece of paper several times to demonstrate how smoking impacts one’s appearance.

English announces committee approval of federal funds for LECOM

U.S. Rep. Phil English (R-Pa.) announced Aug. 27 that the House Committee on Appropriations has approved $500,000 in federal funds for a new Geriatric Treatment Assessment Center at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine. Funding for this project is part of the fiscal year 2009 Labor, Health and Human Services and Education Appropriations bill. The bill awaits action on the House floor and must be approved by the Senate and the president before funding is final.

Erie BayHawks announce partnership with LECOM

The Erie BayHawks of the NBA Development League on Aug. 12 announced a long-term agreement with the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine to be the exclusive, presenting partner for the team. The American Osteopathic Association installed Carlo J. DiMarco, DO, professor and regional dean of clinical medicine at the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and director of the ophthalmology residency program at Millcreek Community Hospital, as its 2008-09 president on Saturday, July 19.

“The DiMarco family has roots in professions that nurture the community. My grandmother worked as a nurse in Italy treating wounded soldiers during World War II,” said Dr. DiMarco in his inaugural address. “When I worked as an auto mechanic to pay for medical school, I never would have guessed that one day I would become president of the American Osteopathic Association.”

Wellness Center continues to take shape

LECOM’s Medical Fitness and Wellness Center continues to take shape as construction crews continue to work on the inside of the building throughout the summer and into the fall. Completion of the project is expected by the end of 2008.

Recently, LECOM hired Michael Hyek, PhD, as Director of the Medical Fitness and Wellness Center. An experienced medical wellness facility director, Dr. Hyek is uniquely qualified in program management and development, process improvement and operations as a result of experience obtained in medical fitness centers, academic institutions, privately owned business and cardiac rehabilitation programs.

LECOM expands class size to include courses at Seton Hill University

LECOM has received preliminary approval to expand the Erie class size by 104 students in 2009 and the College has reached an additional site agreement with Seton Hill University to hold classes for those students in Greensburg, Pennsylvania. At a news conference in Greensburg, leaders from both institutions released details of the agreement and plans for beginning classes in August 2009.

Members of the Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine-Bradenton Emergency Room Club (ERC) gave high school students a sobering reminder about the dangers of drinking and driving.

On May 8, two wrecked vehicles were hauled onto the football field at Braden River High School. LECOM ERC students played the role of motorists who had just been severely injured in an alcohol-related accident.

Staff members from the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, Braden River Fire Department, EMS and BayFlite’s helicopter team recreated the roles they would perform as if they were actually responding to an accident.

The event was coordinated with Manatee County’s emergency service agencies, Braden River High School and Mother’s Against Drunk Driving (MADD).
